The spot looks finished on the day it is not
The grinder shuts off, the crew rakes the pile level, and the yard looks whole again. Most homeowners write the job off right there.
The next three months are the part nobody describes at the estimate. The ground sinks. Grass comes in patchy or refuses. Something green comes up from the roots the following spring.
None of that is a sign the work went badly. It is what a ground stump does while it rots, and a homeowner who knows the sequence can get ahead of every step.

What is actually sitting in that hole
A grinder does not lift a stump out. It chews it into pieces that stay where the tree was.
University of Illinois Extension describes the result: "Typically, the grindings from a tree stump get mixed in with the surrounding soil as the blade chews up the stump."
Depth varies by machine. The same page puts the range at "flush to the soil line to over a foot deep."
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach puts a working number on the common case: "These large machines will chew away the stump and any large lateral roots, typically down 8 to 12 inches."
Garland County adds a ceiling of its own. Bismarck is one of the soil series the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service maps here, and its description gives "Solum thickness and depth to shale ranges from 10 to 20 inches." A grinder on a Hot Springs ridge lot can reach rock inside the same depth range as the grind.
So what remains underground after a normal grind is the deep root system and every lateral root running out past the wheel. Those pieces stay put, and they rot on their own schedule.
Why the ground sinks weeks later
This is the part that surprises people, and the mechanism is simple once somebody names it.
Iowa State Extension states it in one sentence on its page about planting grass after stump removal: "decaying bulky wood fragments and root fragments create voids in the soil, leading to settling and uneven turf surfaces over time."
Wood holds its shape while it is wood. As it breaks down it stops holding anything, and the soil above drops into the space it used to fill. That happens over months, well after the crew has gone.
Iowa State turns that into an instruction: "Lightly mound the area above the surrounding grade to allow for future settling." A spot that looks slightly high on the day the crew leaves is a spot that will look level by spring.
Grass over grindings, and the nitrogen problem
A homeowner who wants lawn back in that spot has one more thing to handle first.
Illinois Extension explains why chips and turf fight each other: "Wood material mixed in with the soil can tie up nitrogen as the wood breaks down, making it difficult to grow lawn, or another plant where the tree once stood." Iowa State names the same effect in different terms: "These materials have a high carbon-to-nitrogen ratio and can temporarily reduce the nitrogen available to new grass."
Both services give the same remedy. Illinois: "If planting turfgrass where the former tree resided, it is recommended to haul off the chipped stump debris and fill the hole with quality topsoil." Iowa State: "These materials should be removed as thoroughly as possible before planting grass," then "add quality topsoil to replace the volume lost to grinding."
That changes what a homeowner should ask for at the estimate. The standard finish is to push the grindings back into the hole and level them off, and for most spots in a yard that is the right call. A spot that has to grow grass wants the grindings hauled and topsoil brought in instead. Say which one you want before the crew loads up. That costs a conversation. Deciding afterward costs a second visit.
Can a new tree go in the same hole
Homeowners ask this constantly, and the honest answer is that it is possible and usually a worse idea than moving over a few feet.
Iowa State Extension is direct: "While planting a new tree in the exact same spot as a tree that was removed is possible, it is not advised." It gives three separate reasons, and the third is the one most people never consider.
Space is the first. "If any of the old tree's roots are still in the ground, the newly planted young tree may not have enough room to grow." A young root ball has to find its way past everything the grinder did not reach.
Soil chemistry is the second, and it is the nitrogen problem again in a deeper hole.
Disease is the third: "If the old tree was removed because of a disease or pest issue, that same issue could be present in the soil and infect the new tree." University of Minnesota Extension makes that concrete for one common root disease. Armillaria "can survive many years in wood debris like an old stump or root system." Grinding the visible stump does not remove that debris.
Iowa State also gives the distance that solves most of it: plant "at least three feet, but ideally six to eight feet away from the removed tree."
A homeowner set on the old footprint should say so before grinding day. That job calls for a deeper grind and for the grindings to come out, and it is a different scope from a standard finish.
The sprouts that come up next spring
A ground stump is not always a dead root system.
Illinois Extension names the behavior: "If a live tree is cut down, often it will resprout from the stump or the surrounding root system." The best time to stop it is at the felling cut, before any grinder arrives. Illinois again: "For live tree stumps, while the cut is fresh, treat the outer sapwood with a systemic herbicide containing glyphosate or triclopyr."
Sweetgum is the Garland County example worth knowing. The USDA Forest Service Silvics of North America entry reports what the species does after the trunk is gone: "a significant portion of sweetgum regeneration following logging can be expected to originate from root sprouts." The scale is the striking part: "It is not uncommon to find as many as 40 or more stems from seedling to sapling size on the root systems of a single parent tree."
Grinding alone does not settle it either. The University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program says so plainly about the vigorous sprouters. "Stump grinding may not be effective for these difficult species."
Sprouts that appear later still come off easily. Cut them at ground level every week through one growing season and the root runs out of the leaf area it needs to keep pushing. That is slower than a fresh-cut treatment and it works.
What the spot does, on a timeline
On the day, the backfill sits a little proud of grade, and that is deliberate. Iowa State asks for exactly that mound so the spot has somewhere to drop to.
Within a few weeks the surface firms up enough to take seed or sod in most yards. Clower Tree Service says the same thing on its own stump grinding page.
Over the first year the wood underneath breaks down and the voids open. The spot settles toward grade and often past it. Walk out with a few bags of topsoil, fill the low spot, and reseed the patch. One topdressing usually closes it, and a second one the following year finishes any yard where the stump was large.
The following spring is when sprouts show up if they are going to. Cut them at ground level and keep cutting them until they stop.
